Walking Intro

 3a

Walking in place
In the previous practice, we only moved two limbs. While walking, we move all four.  One foot is firmly rooted, while the other three limbs move.  This practice is designed to connect the other three limbs while they move.  It is more challenging to do this while actually walking so this practice constitutes a transition to doing this while walking.

You must be able to balance on one foot to do this practice. It is sort of like walking in place.

Balance on one foot, let's say the right.
Swing the left leg forward and backward from the hip joint.
At the same time, swing the right arm so it coordinates with the left leg, both moving forward and backward at the same time.
Now add the left arm, which swings in the opposite direction from the right arm.

Once you can do this, switch sides.

Here are the points to practice.
Don't go fast. Make the swinging slow and enjoyable. Keep your attention on your limbs.
Connect the opposite leg and arm.
Begin with hand and foot.
Then connect hand and lower arm with foot and lower leg.
Then connect arm as a whole and leg as a whole.
Finally, connect the limbs from their joints, the leg from the hip joint to the tips of the toes and the arm from the shoulder joint to the tips of the fingers.
The three moving limbs should reverse direction at exactly the same moment.
The connected arm and leg should move the same distance in front and back.
